Songs for Limón, Songs for Colón is a luminous and calypsonian jukebox that I created as a way to build a musical solidarity bridge between Limón (Costa Rica) and Colón (Panamá), using calyspo sound waves as the medium.
Both port-cities share somewhat similar historical and present circumstances: both were founded by colonial and postcolonial interests, which at some point had a confluence of immigration from the Antilles. In Colon the drive was the American Gold Rush and later the Panama Canal, in Limon it was the United Fruit Company carrying bananas. When economic and political changes came about, government attention shifted away from these cities for decades. Now, the gates to the Caribbean are attractive again to the powers that be, and they face the opportunity and/or threat of restoration lead by economic interests which don’t exactly incorporate an honest social appreciation for their inhabitants. Both cities share calypso. And it is revealing that songs fifty or more years old tell stories or reflect social sentiments that are very much relevant today.
The list of songs in the jukebox was collected through an open invitation to dedicate songs to these two cities, as well as interviewes with calypsonians and lovers of the genre in Panama and Costa Rica. Many people moved to other cities due to the economic crisis that hit Limon and Colón, but the love for their roots (or newfound roots) remains.
Songs for Limón, Songs for Colón was created for the X Central American Biennial, which took place in September 2016 for the first time in San Jose (the capital) and simultaneously in the Caribbean city of Limón. We opened in Puerto Limón, radiating sound and joy throughout the Pasaje Cristal (a space that had been semi abandoned and used occasionally as a workshop for local painters). The collective Islas Resonantes activated and intervened the space to create Horizonte Rocola (Jukebox Horizon), where they hosted workshops, concerts and encounters for the duration of the biennial. The following year, over three weeks in the month of March, the jukebox activated a temporary art space ran by the collective Arte Nómada in partnernship with Islas Resonantes. Rocola en Temporal created the perfect excuse for a series of concerts by the few remaining or reviving calypso bands: The Beachers, The Diggers Descendants (directed by famous jazzist Carlos Garnett), Ringing Bell, and the young musicians of the Escuelita del Ritmo from Portobelo, Colón.

Songs for Limón, Songs for Colón es una rocola luminosa y calypsonian, con la cual propuse crear un puente musical de solidaridad entre Limón (Costa Rica) y Colón (Panamá), utilizando las ondas sonoras del calypso como medio. Ambas ciudades-puerto comparten historias y presentes similares: fueron fundadas por intereses coloniales y postcoloniales, que en algún momento generaron una fuerte imigración desde las Antillas. En Panamá fue el Gold Rush estadounidense, seguido por la construcción del Canal de Panamá, mientras que en Costa Rica fue la United Fruit Company y las bananeras. Debido a cambios económicos y políticos, ambas ciudades fueron olvidadas por sus gobiernos durante décadas. Ahora vuelve a haber interés en las puertas al Caribe y se enfrentan a una oportunidady y/o amenaza de restauración liderada también por intereses económicos que no necesariamente incorporan una apreciación social sincera por sus habitantes. Ambas ciudades comparten el calypso y es revelador que ciertas canciones de cincuenta y más años atrás narran historias o reflejan sentires sociales que siguen siendo relevantes hoy.
La lista de canciones en la rocola fue recopilada por medio de una invitación abierta a dedicar canciones a las ciudades homenajeadas, así como con entrevistas a calypsonians y amantes del género en Panamá y Costa Rica. Muchas personas han migrado a otros lugares por la crisis económica en Limón y Colón, pero el amor por sus raíces permanece.
Songs for Limón, Songs for Colón se realizó para la X Bienal Centroamericana que se llevó a cabo en Costa Rica en septiembre de 2016. Se estrenó en Puerto Limón, irradiando sabor por todo el Pasaje Cristal, un espacio intervenido y activado por el colectivo Islas Resonantes: Horizonte Rocola, donde se ofrecieron talleres, conciertos y encuentros durante la duración de la bienal. Al año siguiente, durante tres semanas del mes de marzo, la rocola activó un espacio artístico temporal gestionado por el colectivo Arte Nómada en colaboración con Islas Resonantes. Rocola en Temporal creó la excusa perfecta para una serie de conciertos de las pocas bandas de calipso que quedaban o estaban reviviendo: The Beachers, The Diggers Descendants (dirigida por el famoso jazzista Carlos Garnett), Ringing Bell, y los jóvenes músicos de la Escuelita del Ritmo de Portobelo, Colón.
