A River in Time (2025) Sound installation created for the exhibition INHABITED DISSONANCE. BOZEN BOLZANO 1922-2025.
A River in Time is a sound work that unfolds in the public space of Bolzano—on the pedestrian bridge in front of the Museion, which crosses the Talfer River. Here, the river becomes a voice that tells of the flow of time. It speaks of the deep time of geological formations, of the emergence of the city and the riverbed, from fascism to the present day. It recalls the transformations of the city along its banks and the construction of the bridges that cross it. It also recalls the naming of these bridges and monuments during fascism and the associated exercises of power.
As the focus shifts from humans to more-than-human life forms, the intertwining of history, the city, and its inhabitants can be experienced in a new way. The analogy between the cycles of water and the currents of ideology opens up a space for reflection—before listeners are released back into the present of the urban space.
In the exhibition space of the Stadtgalerie, the sound of water, together with a photographs of the river, invites visitors to immerse themselves in the work. But to fully experience its flow, it is recommended to go out onto the Museion Bridge.
A River in Time is available here in German, Italian, and English. It can be listened to on headphones through your own device of choice.
