Ecology – how we relate with others and our environment – is the cornerstone of my work. I experiment with nature-culture practices and narratives to reflect on our interconnectedness with all of life. This can take the form of sound and voice works, artist books, spatial interventions and performative experiences, artist residencies, workshops or bespoke support for individuals and organisations. I see my work as gestures or offerings that provide time and space for people to reflect, connect with, (re)create, celebrate, (re)value, harmonize or simply observe our place in the world.
Ela Spalding (Panama/UK, 1982) is an artist~facilitator exploring the ecotones between fields of knowledge, using art as a conduit to practice and convey notions of ecology and interconnectedness. Her work focuses on sound, wellbeing and nature’s processes to invite listening and resonance within and without. She’s founder and director of Estudio Nuboso, a platform for art and ecology based in Panama and Mallorca, Spain. She’s currently working on the notion of nature-culture corridors of planetary solidarity and regeneration, using the Suelo Methodology as a field guide to support people to (re)connect with the places we inhabit. Her artwork has been in group shows throughout Latin America and Europe, in the XIII Bienal de La Habana, Cuba (2019), the X Bienal Centroamericana in Costa Rica (2016), Bienal de Artes Visuales del Istmo Centroamericano (Bavic9) in Guatemala in 2014, and is part of the MAC Contemporary Art Museum of Panama collection. She is currently working on SUELO Mallorca, a series of field days to explore the deep history and regenerative present and future of the island, with Es Baluard Museu, and is co-curating Cumulus: 10+ años de Estudio Nuboso at the MAC Panama.
